Important information

This guide only applies to hosting services that use cPanel.

If your hosting service does not use cPanel, database management may be available directly in the client area instead.

See the guide:

Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure you:

  • Have access to your client area

  • Are logged into cPanel

  • Have a hosting service with database functionality

Step 1: Open database section in cPanel

Log in to cPanel and scroll down to the "Databases" section.

Here you will find, among other things:

  • phpMyAdmin

  • Manage My Databases

  • Database Wizard

  • Remote Database Access

šŸ’” Tip: ā€œDatabase Wizardā€ is the easiest way to create new databases and database users.

Step 2: Create and manage databases

Click ā€œManage My Databasesā€ to open database management in cPanel.

Create a new database

Under the "Create New Database" section, you can create a new database.

This is how you do it:

  1. Enter a name for the database

  2. Click on "Create Database"

cPanel will automatically add the account prefix in front of the database name.

Manage existing databases

Further down the page you will find the section ā€œCurrent Databasesā€ section.

Here you can, among other things:

  • View existing databases

  • Manage database users

  • Add users to databases

  • Manage User Rights

  • Control databases

  • Repair databases

šŸ’” Tip: After the database is created, you need to create or connect to a database user with the right permissions before the database can be used by applications like WordPress.

šŸ’” Tip: If you install WordPress via the WordPress tools in cPanel, the database is usually created automatically as part of the installation.

Step 3: Create a database user

In order for applications like WordPress to connect to the database, you need to create a database user and give the user access to the database.

Under the ā€œDatabase Usersā€ section, you can create a new database user.

This is how you do it:

4. Enter a username

5. Enter a password

6. Verify the password

7. Click on ā€œCreate Userā€

cPanel will automatically add the account prefix in front of the username.

šŸ’” Tip: Use a strong password for your database user to increase security.
