File permissions determine who can read, write or execute a file or folder. This is especially important for scripts and public files.
Important information
⚠️ Change of permissions can affect how the site works. Give only the necessary permissions.
Step 1: Log in to cPanel
If your hosting service supports cPanel, you can log in directly from the landing page in the client area.
This is how you do it:
Find your hosting service under the list of active products/services
Click on the button "Log in to cPanel"
You are now automatically logged into cPanel without having to enter your username or password again
Step 2: Open File Manager
Go to the Files section and click on File Manager.
Step 3: Find the file or folder
Navigate to the file or folder for which you want to change permissions.
Step 4: Change permissions
Select the file or folder.
Click on Permissions in the toolbar.
3. Change the values for "Read", "Write" and "Execute" as needed (e.g. 0644 for files).
4. Click on Change Permissions to save the changes.
The file's permissions have now been updated. Make sure to test that the site or script works as expected.
Summary
You have now learned how to change permissions for files and folders in cPanel & File Manager tools.
