Important information
⚠️ Be careful when you rename files used by the website.
If you change the name of a file that is referenced by web pages, scripts, or images, it may lead to broken links or error messages.
Prerequisites
Before you start, make sure you:
Have access to cPanel
Are logged into cPanel
Know which file or folder you want to name
Step 1: Log in to cPanel
If your hosting service supports cPanel, you can log in directly from the dashboard in the client area.
This is how you do it:
Find your hosting service under the list of active products/services
Click on the button "Log in to cPanel"
You are now automatically logged into cPanel without having to enter your username or password again
Step 2: Open File Processing
Go to Files section and click on File Manager
Step 3: Find the file or folder
Navigate to the location where the file or folder is located.
(In this case, we give a new name to the folder "folder_example")
Step 4: Rename
Select on the file or folder
Click on Rename in the toolbar
3. Enter the new name
4. Click on Rename file
💡 Tip: You can also click directly on the file name and type a new name.
The folder or file now gets the new name, which is reflected in the file overview:
Troubleshooting
The site does not work after the name change
Make sure that:
Links and references to the file are updated
File name does not contain invalid characters
File format (for example .php or .html) is still correct
