FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used to transfer files between your computer and your web hosting. To connect to your web hosting via FTP, you need a username and password.
You may need to change the FTP password when you:
Want to increase the security of your web hosting
Have shared the password with someone who should no longer have access
Have forgotten the existing password
Suspect that the password has been compromised
When you have completed this guide, you will know how to change the FTP password for your web hosting service in the customer area.
Important information
⚠️ When you change the FTP password, you must update the password in all FTP clients and applications that use the existing connection. Existing FTP connections using the old password will stop working.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you:
Have access to the customer area
Are logged in to the customer area
Have an active web hosting service
Step 1: Open your web hosting service
In the customer area, click View details under your web hosting plan:
The system will open the service overview.
Step 2: Open the FTP settings
Click Change Password in the menu on the left:
The system opens the page for changing the FTP password.
Step 3: Change the FTP password
Enter the new password (the field will turn green when you have entered a strong password)
Confirm the new password
Click Save changes
The system will now update the FTP password, and you will receive a confirmation that the change has been completed.
⚠️ It may take a few minutes before the new password takes effect.
Step 4: Update your FTP client
After the password has been changed, you must update the FTP password in your FTP client.
💡 Tip: If you are unsure which FTP client you are using or how to update the password, refer to the documentation for your FTP client.
Troubleshooting
I cannot log in via FTP after changing the password
Check that:
The new password has been entered correctly in the FTP client
The FTP username has not been changed
Enough time has passed for the password change to take effect
I have forgotten my FTP username
The FTP username can be found in the service overview for your web hosting plan in the customer area, under Connection Details.
The password field is not turning green
The password is not strong enough. Try a password that contains a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters.
I cannot find the option to change the FTP password
Check that you have opened the correct service in the customer area, and that your web hosting plan supports FTP access.
Summary
You have now learned how to change the FTP password for your web hosting service in the customer area.
By keeping your FTP password up to date and secure, you can protect the files and content on your web hosting from unauthorised access.
