How to change nameservers for a domain

If you want to use a different DNS provider for your domain, or want to connect the domain to website providers such as Wix, you can change the nameservers.

Overview

In the customer area it is possible to change the nameservers for a domain from the default nameservers to custom ones. These can be nameservers you have set up yourself, or received from an external DNS provider.

Providers such as Wix and WordPress.com will typically ask you to use their nameservers for the domain you want to connect to the website you have built with them, so that you do not have to manually update DNS records if changes are made on their end.

When you have completed this guide, you will know how to change the nameservers for your domain.

Important information

⚠️ A nameserver change can take up to 24–48 hours to take effect and become visible across the internet.

⚠️ For .no domains, the nameservers you are switching to must be configured to answer authoritatively for the domain BEFORE you can change the nameservers. The new DNS provider must have created a correct zone file for the domain on their servers, otherwise the nameserver change cannot be completed.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you:

  • Have access to the customer area

  • Are logged in to the customer area

  • Have an active domain

  • Have received the new nameservers from your provider

Step 5: Disable the registrar lock

If the registrar lock for the domain is enabled, you may in some cases receive an error message stating that it is active when you try to change the nameservers for the domain.

You will then need to temporarily disable the registrar lock in order to change the nameservers.

Click Registrar lock in the menu on the left:

Click the button labelled Disable Registrar Lock:

The registrar lock is now disabled, and you can try adding the nameservers again.

⚠️ Make sure you re-enable the registrar lock once you have finished changing the nameservers. It should remain disabled only if you are transferring the domain to another registrar.
