How to manage URL forwarding for your domains in the customer area

Manage URL forwardings for your domains in the customer area. This guide shows you how to create URL forwardings for your domain.

Overview

URL forwarding lets you redirect visitors who go to one web address to another.

Examples:

www.getmeasandwich.com → getmeasandwich.com
shop.getmeasandwich.com → getmeasandwich.com/shop

This can be useful when you:

  • Want to redirect visitors from www to your main domain

  • Want to point a subdomain to a specific page

  • Are migrating a website and need to redirect old addresses

  • Want to create a short or more memorable address that redirects to a longer URL

When you have completed this guide, you will know how to create and manage URL forwardings in the customer area.

Important information

⚠️ DNS changes may need time to propagate before a new forwarding rule becomes active. This can take up to 24–48 hours.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you:

  • Have access to the customer area

  • Are logged in to the customer area

  • Have an active domain

  • Have an active forwarding service

Step 1: Open your forwarding service

In the customer area, click View details under your Domain forwarding plan:

The system will open the service overview.

Step 2: Add a domain

To be able to add forwardings for a domain, it must first be added under Your domains:

  1. Select the domain you want to forward in the dropdown menu

  2. Click Add domain:

The domain will now be added, and you will be able to create forwardings for it.

Step 3: Create a new URL forwarding

Under Add new forwarding:

3. Enter the source domain or subdomain — the web address you want to redirect visitors away from (for example, shop.getmeasandwich.com)

4. Enter the destination URL — the web address you want to send visitors to (for example, https://getmeasandwich.com/shop)

5. Click Add forwarding:

The forwarding rule will now be created and will appear under the list of existing URL forwardings:

⚠️ The forwardings we create are of the type 301 — permanent redirect. If you want to create, for example, 302 forwardings, you will need to do this manually using HTML in your website files.

Step 4: Test the forwarding

To confirm that the forwarding is working:

6. Open a browser and go to the source address

7. Check that you are redirected to the correct destination address

💡 Tip: It may take a few minutes before new forwarding rules are active. If the forwarding is not working immediately, wait a short while and try again.

Deleting a forwarding rule

If you no longer need a forwarding rule:

8. Find the forwarding rule you want to delete in the overview

9. Click the trash icon:

The forwarding rule is removed immediately.

Troubleshooting

The forwarding is not working
Check that:

  • The source address has been entered correctly

  • The destination address is valid and accessible

  • The domain has been added to the forwarding service

Visitors are being redirected to the wrong address
Check that:

  • The correct destination address has been entered

  • There are no conflicting forwarding rules for the same address

I cannot find the domain in the forwarding setup
The domain must first be added to the forwarding service before a forwarding rule can be created for it.

The forwarding is affecting my search engine rankings
If the redirect is permanent, use a forwarding rule as described in this article. If you are unsure whether the change is permanent, use a 302 redirect until you have decided (this must be done manually in your website files).

Summary

You have now learned how to create and manage URL forwardings in the customer area.

By using URL forwarding, you can ensure visitors always reach the correct destination, whether you are redirecting from www to your main domain, pointing subdomains to specific pages, or managing traffic during a website migration.
